Hanuman is a mythic being. In non-Indian cultures, he would take another form. For example, among the Hawaiaans, he could take the form of the dolphin. This could account for the tail in the painting. The significance of the tail, yes according to the viewer, but also could represent an underlying passion of the artist….whale dolphin…important figures among the Polynesians.
I spy a little face up there.
The tail says mermaid more than monkey god though. Is there a significance? Or is it just an unexpected element?

Good point! Maybe it’s a mermaid who is becoming Hanuman?
I believe the significance lies in the eyes of the beholder (whether me or someone else).
