Actually, bottom iris was from a photo. I was surprised to find it was easier for me to see the details in the real 3-D image.

I often paint from photos. The upper image is more illustrative than the lower one, which flows more like a moment in time without the benefit of a complete inspection. I think the slightly tilted angle of the lower image makes for a more interesting image.
